920624: Wednesday, St. Jean Baptiste: Mtl to Mont St. Bruno & Back: Estimated distance: approx 72 km, travelling time 5 hrs + 15km on site Cloudy day, threat of rain. Left at 10:30 for mountain visible off in the distance on the South Shore. DeMaisonneuve trail to St. Jacques, connect with Lachine Trail. Take Lachine trail east to end at port, then out by Cite du Havre and over Concorde bridge. Back along bike path along seaway to crossing at locks. This phase takes about an hour. Just after crossing, gates went down for approaching ship. I waited half an hour at seaway while ship approached and went through. On my way again around 12:15. New to the South Shore on bike. Crossing over highway drops one at Rivermere in St. Lambert. Along Rivermere, quiet residential street, to Queen. Queen over a couple of blocks to bridge street, now called Sir Wilfred Laurier. Follow it around to Victoria, buy map in depanneur. It's a good thing, too, as my intuition about route was wrong. I always have trouble with directions on the South Shore. St. Louis through Ville LeMoyne, kind of a run down main street. Then connect with Sir Wilfred Laurier, hwy 116 at intersection with Boul. Taschereau. Hwy 116 is a busy highway, straight as an arrow, following the main-line railroad tracks on out of town. It heads directly where I am going. At first, wide shoulders, no problem. I keep away from traffic. Then, on into St. Hubert, it becomes a freeway, no bikes allowed. I am shunted off onto a service road, but am just as happy. Diversion as Chemin Chambly. Consult map, then pick up Avenue Raoul on the other side, keeping right next to freeway, and head out into the countryside. At intersection with Autoroute 30, thrust back into civilisation as come upon massive shopping centre, Les Promenades St. Bruno. Road becomes Montee des promenades as it crosses autoroute, then becomes Montee Sabourin, narrows to two-laned country road and I am out in the fields. Leave this road at De La Rebastaliere, turning towards St. Bruno. Cross main highway, 116, and railroad tracks, then am on residential artery within town of St. Bruno. At Boul. Montarville, stop and have lunch at MacDonalds. Then continue on Rebastaliere up the mountain to gates of park. Follow gravel road arount Lac Seigneurial, then go off on trail towards Lac des Bouleaux, where bikes are really not supposed to be. Follow trail on to Lac a la Tortue. Trail is not too bad. About 3 feet wide, nicely gravelled. Only at last part did it begin to get rather savage. I stopped at Lac Tortue, after having had to portage the bike up and down a couple of really steep hills. It looked like the trail would be more of the same. All totalled, about 15km in park. Retraced route back to main gravel road where bikes are supposed to be. Went to the "Acceuil" and got a map and folder, then continued over to Rebastaliere exit again and started on out, along the same route. The other, higher mountain, Mt. St. Hilaire, looks accessible. It might be about an hour further on down the road. Got back into Montreal in two and a half hours, at 6:00.
